The lowdown on Lance Stroll
2017: 12th place. Born: 29/10/1998.
From teenage rookie in 2017, Lance Stroll finds himself in the position of being Williams’ most experienced F1 driver alongside newcomer Sergey Sirotkin.
The son of a Canadian billionaire, eyebrows were raised when he was given a race seat, especially as he failed to finish the first three races.
However, he secured Williams’ only podium of the season with third place in Azerbaijan, becoming the second-youngest F1 driver to ever achieve that feat.
Stroll also started second on the grid at Monza – even if only because of penalties for the two Red Bull cars, who were demoted after qualifying.
Stroll finished the season just three points behind veteran team-mate Felipe Massa, who has retired for good this time.
How Stroll fares without the experienced Brazilian remains to be seen, though he did draw a dignified, bemused response from Massa when he claimed that he wasn’t receiving any guidance from the former Ferrari driver anyway.
Stroll, whose father owns a race circuit in Canada, came into F1 after winning the Formula Three championship in 2016.
