Sergey Sirotkin

The lowdown on Sergey Sirotkin

2017: N/A. Born: 25/8/1995.

Much attention will be focused on rookie Sergey Sirotkin this season, after he was given the second Williams seat ahead of Robert Kubica.

Sirotkin will be the third Russian to drive in F1, following Vitaly Petrov (2010-12) and Daniil Kvyat (2014-17), as he teams up with Canadian teenager Lance Stroll, who made his debut last year.

He tested alongside Kubica in Abu Dhabi after the end of last season, and his results convinced team bosses to go for an inexperienced driver line-up.

The veteran Pole, meanwhile, was given a reserve role as he continues his comeback from the serious injuries that halted his F1 career in 2011. Kubica showed his dedication to the cause when he gave up his allotted time during pre-season testing in Barcelona to give Stroll and Sirotkin more opportunities behind the wheel.

Sirotkin landed a role as Sauber’s test driver in 2014 but moved on after the team restructured. Two promising seasons in GP2/F2 – finishing third both times -- led to a testing deal with Renault and then a reserve driver contract in 2017, when he appeared at several FP1 sessions.
